Why do people complain about overpopulation and then send aid to Africa?

In school they teach us about how the world is becoming overpopulated and we are running out of resources. But then at the same time they say we need to help people in Africa. When Africa is the fastest growing continent in the world in terms of population, and is already scarce on resources and food availability. Are my teachers being hypocrites? Or am I just missing something?
