Ukraine
In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the country's economy shrank by 35.5% in 2022. Ukraine is facing its deepest recession since the declaration of independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The war has affected all sectors of the economy. The direct (destruction and damage to civilian and military infrastructure) and indirect (fall in GDP, halt in investment, outflow of labour, additional costs for defence and social support, etc.) losses to the Ukrainian economy as a result of the war are around EUR 1 trillion. Inflation and the country's soaring debt remain a significant problem. The loss of vast industrial territories, massive internal and especially external migration and business closures have led to a sharp rise in unemployment in 2022.
The Czech Republic has long been implementing humanitarian aid as well as development and transition cooperation projects in Ukraine. After 2014, the Czech Republic's activities in the country were significantly expanded. Through small development projects and the MEDEVAC programme, the Czech Republic is helping to develop the material and expertise of medical institutions and universities. In addition, the Czech Republic implements security development cooperation projects in Ukraine, offers government scholarships and actively participates in the implementation of projects of the International Visegrad Fund.
