Long-term Access to Water in the Alaba District
The project started in June 2011 and it aims to improve the current system of water sources management in Alaba Special Woreda, Etiopia. The long-term objective is to ensure that re-settled system will be fully operational, more effective and flexible without any increases in funding or external foreign support after project termination.
In the first period, the project shall focus on capacity building and introduction of model water sources management in 10 kebeles. This model should afterwards be extended into all 40 kebeles where the drilled wells are located. By setting an economic and functional system covering the existing gaps in water management, the long-term solution for sustainable water sources management will be reached.
By enhancing Alaba Special Woreda’s capacities in current water sources maintenance, the project pursues efforts in increasing the proportion of permanently functional water sources and shortening the time between disorders and repairs. These steps should enhance access to and availability of drinking water for local people.
